Albany Academy boys’ basketball falls just short in Federation championship game

GUILDERLAND CENTER — The Albany Academy boys’ basketball team played catchup all afternoon on Sunday and never quite got there, losing 55-51 to Monsignor Farrell in the championship game of the Federation Tournament of Champions at Guilderland High School.

The Cadets (15-7) got within two points of the Lions with 14 seconds left, but Monsignor Farrell (23-6) was able to close out the victory with two free throws with 10 seconds left.

Monsignor Farrell led at halftime 27-24 and extended it to 41-34 through three quarters.

Albany Academy, representing the Association of Independent Schools, reached the championship game with a 59-55 victory over NYSPHSAA champ Tappan Zee on Saturday.

The Cadets were seeking their fifth Federation championship.
