In the Pocket: Guilderland’s Mazuryk is getting back into bowling competition

IN THE POCKET – For a couple of decades, Joe Mazuryk was the undisputed king of the hill among Capital Region amateur male bowlers. His power, skill and game management made him the favorite every time he stepped onto the lanes, whether competing in an individual scratch event or in tandem with longtime doubles partner Mike Drexel.

Yet Mazuryk, now 46, gradually backed off from competition to spend more time with his kids and wife, Jamie. He popped up at a special event occasionally, but he was never a big fan of league competition, and he usually only showed up at a few major tournaments.

Now that the Voorheesville High School and SUNY Schenectady graduate is working with his wife’s very successful real estate company, CM Fox Real Estate LLC, and their children are a little older, Mazuryk has a little more time to practice and compete in some serious events. The Guilderland resident showed he’s once again a force to be reckoned with when he won last weekend’s 8-Game Marathon at Fishkill Bowl.

“Basically, I’ve been bowling quite a bit lately,” said Mazuryk. “I did quite well in the Fishkill tournament, and I’ve been filling in at Marty’s place [the City League at Towne Bowling Academy]. I told a couple of people that I can sub, and my phone has been ringing all the time. Maybe next season, I’ll get back into a league.”

Mazuryk believes he can still compete with the best in the area, but he still needs to fine-tune his game.

“I’m 46 now, and I know I’m still competitive,” he said. “My kids are older, and now that I’m doing the real estate thing with my wife, I can practice during the day a little more. I’m really getting into it now. I’ll go to Marty’s place and practice with Nick Galusha, Ed Gumm and Matt Fazzone, or I’ll go to Tom Walsh’s place [Uncle Sam Lanes] and practice with Warren Guernsey.

“What’s really helped me is that I’ve been working out a lot. I’ve got 1,500 rounds on my Peleton [high-level exercise bike], and during the marathon tournament, I didn’t get tired. My ball speed is up and my legs weren’t tired. I think my conditioning has got to help me a lot. But as far as the game, it has changed a lot in the last few years. Urethane is back in play and the patterns are tighter. I’m still trying to figure out my equipment. Brian [LeClair] and Warren have drilled me up a couple of balls, but there are still pieces I need to fill in my arsenal.”

Mazuryk prefers to keep his bowling equipment choices simple.

“I won the tournament over the weekend with a Global Messenger the whole day. I’ve always been a Storm/Roto Grip guy, but now I’ve been using a lot of Global 900 stuff. I’m not a guy who drills a lot of equipment. I like to make my adjustments with hand position and speed, when I can. These days, everyone is looking for that magic ball for their adjustments. That’s fine for them, but I still prefer to make other adjustments first.”

Mazuryk pointed out that along with subbing in the City League, he’s shown some positive signs in tournament competition.

“I’m still figuring things out in terms of ball speed and rotation, but I made the cut at the Bud Bowl and at Doug Kent’s place [the Brockmyre Classic at Rose Bowl]. I made the cut but then lost my ball reaction. I should excel when the lanes start to hook, but I’m having a little trouble with the transition right now,” he noted.

Mazuryk rarely had trouble making the right moves during his two decades as king of the hill. He once won a record three New England Bowling Association tournaments in a row to go along with an unbelievable 30 Huck Finn Capital Region Bowling Show victories and another 15 Northern Bowlers Association titles, including the Cuby Cup points championship.

Mazuryk also won the prestigious Bowlers Journal crown and finished in the top eight at the national Super Hoinke championship. He’s collected 79 perfect games and approximately 30 800 triples — extremely impressive when you consider that he’s rarely competed much in league competition during his entire career. His best triple is an 845, and he once averaged 233 in league play.

“I’m in a different situation now, so I can practice when I want,” Mazuryk said. “League bowling just keeps your hand in the ball so you are ready for tournaments. Nick Galusha is my doubles partner now that Mike Drexel doesn’t bowl any more, and we practice a lot. I do miss hanging out with the guys in league play, but I don’t like getting too involved in the league [house] shots.

Mazuryk knows the game has changed quite a bit over the last few years, and he’s still trying to catch up.

“Obviously, the two-handers are a thing now, and they break down the lanes differently. I’ve been talking to Brian LeClair about the lane conditions, and he explained there is more oil now in the body of the lane, which makes transition a little trickier. When you throw in the 2-handers and the urethane equipment, the moves you make aren’t the same moves I did earlier in my career,” he said.

“Business is good, so I can stay home with the kids and work a lot from home. It allows me a lot of flexibility,” Mazuryk said. “If I walk into a bowling center and don’t think I can win, I don’t want to be there.

“For example, I bowl in the Donato [Scratch Singles] every year. I make the cut, but I’m not as sharp as I used to be, and I lose in the early matches. Now, I’m practicing a lot and my physical game is good. My legs are strong. I’m learning how to play on the fresh [oil] from the right, and I’ve gotten a lot better with that than I used to be. I might be better now on the fresh than when the lanes are hooking. But when I look around at the tournaments these days, I don’t know a lot of the younger guys.”

Watch out if Mazuryk continues to adjust to the current bowling conditions. His exceptional physical game once again makes him a threat in every event.

Handicap is 90% of a 940 team average. One in four teams will cash. Entry fee is $100 per team. Brackets, raffles and other optional events will be available. All proceeds go toward a local family in need. Contact Benny Alois or Boulevard Bowl for more information.
