Sports briefs: MAAC recognizes five influential Siena people for Women’s History Month

SPORTS BRIEFS – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Association recognized five former Siena players, coaches and administrators as women leaders during the 50th anniversary of Title IX and Women’s History Month.

The MAAC recognized Vicki (Aromando) Bersch, Jane Buratto, Gina Castelli, Joyce Eggleston and Burgandy McCurty.

Bersch graduated in 1982 as the second all-time leading scorer in women’s basketball program history with 1,594 points. She was a two-time All-American, and also played two seasons of softball, finishing with a .528 career average. She was the first woman to be inducted into the Siena Hall of Fame, in 1987.

Buratto was a member of Siena’s first intercollegiate field hockey team in 1978, finishing a four-year career with 33 goals. She also was the class’ valedictorian and inducted into the Siena Athletic Hall of Fame in 1990.

Castelli was the head women’s basketball coach from 1990-2012 and left as the winningest coach in program history with 336 victories. She was the MAAC Coach of the Year five times and led the program to its only NCAA Tournament appearance in 2001.

Eggleston began her Siena career as women’s athletic coordinator in 1978, in addition to coaching three sports. She spent the final 15 years of her 36-year tenure as associate director of athletics, senior women’s administrator and the college’s first Division I compliance officer.

McCurty, a 2010 graduate, led the Saints to NCAA Tournament appearances in women’s volleyball in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She was a three-time MAAC Offensive Player of the Year from 2007-09 and a four-time All-MAAC selection. She currently serves on Siena’s Board of Trustees.

NCAA men’s lacrosse tourney tickets on sale at UAlbany

Tickets for the NCAA men’s lacrosse tournament quarterfinals at UAlbany’s Tom & Mary Casey Stadium are now on sale.

The games will be played Saturday, May 20, at noon and 2:30 p.m.

Tickets, sold as all-session, are available between $14 and $40 depending on seating location, and advanced parking is available online. Parking will be $20 in the Dutch Lot and $40 in the SEFCU Lot.
