Firefighters battle flames as they pour from the Rotterdam Fire District 2 training facility, directly behind the Curry Road firehouse shortly after 7 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2023. The structure, still under construction suffered heavy damage. One firefighter was seen being evaluated by Rotterdam EMS personnel.

ROTTERDAM — At around 7 a.m. on Saturday, Rotterdam Fire District #2 was dispatched to a reported structure fire near their firehouse, according to a Facebook post from the volunteer fire department.

A passerby saw smoke coming from a building on the fire department’s property. According to the Facebook post, fire chiefs arrived on scene and found the new garage and training building aflame, with the fire having started in the attic.

Engine 1224 was positioned behind the firehouse, and firefighters pulled a hand line to the second floor and began opening up the ceiling to begin attempts at extinguishing the fire.

Two additional hand lines were pulled to protect the exposures on the C and D sides of the building.

Lightweight construction helped the fire spread faster, and it was soon determined that an interior attack was no longer feasible so defensive operations began. The fire was soon extinguished and marked under control.

No one was injured during this incident, and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
