Union women’s lacrosse earns win over nationally ranked Ithaca

SCHENECTADY — The Union College women’s lacrosse team jumped out to a six-goal first quarter en route to defeating No. 13/14-ranked Ithaca 13-11 in Liberty League action Saturday at Frank Bailey Field.

Union (2-1 conference, 6-2 overall) unleashed 14 shots in the first quarter, with Dana Truini scoring both of her goals for the afternoon in the period, which the Dutchwomen led 6-2.

Union increased its lead to 9-3 on two goals by Drew Charlton and one from Anna Smith before Ithaca (4-1, 7-3) rallied. The Bombers eventually tied it at 10 and 11, but Greta Maurer’s goal 34 seconds into the fourth quarter gave Union the lead for good.

Chloe Nordyke and Caroline Wise each had three goals for Ithaca.

Charlton tied her career high with five goals, to go along with an assist, to lead Union in scoring. Sydney McPartlon had two goals and one assist, while Smith and Truini each scored twice, with Truini grabbing nine draw controls. Sydney Widlitz made 12 saves, including four in the final two and a half minutes to preserve the win.
