ALBANY – A Schenectady woman has been arrested, accused of directing a child to abandon a dog in the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, police said Tuesday.
The dog is currently in the custody of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and is doing well, police said.
Rachel Gibson, 33, of Schenectady, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty, abandonment of animals and endangering the welfare of a child.
The investigation began Thursday at around 3:45 p.m., when officers responded to the Pine Bush, near New Karner Road and Old State Road, for reports of an abandoned dog, police said.
They arrived to find a female pitbull mix tied to a tree without food or water while temperatures remained in the high 80s, police said.
Albany Animal Control also responded and took the dog to the humane society, where it was evaluated and received medical care, police said. It remained there Tuesday, police said.
Investigators arrested Gibson Tuesday.
They determined that Gibson had drove to Albany April 13, where she directed a 14-year-old girl known to her to exit the car and tie the dog to a tree, police said. Gibson had this done in the presence of her 12-year-old daughter, who remained in the car, police said.
Gibson was processed and released to be arraigned later.
