SECTION 2 – The 2023 Section 2 football schedule is set.
Well, mostly.
The schedule was distributed Wednesday night, but with a caveat included. The postseason format for both Class A and Class C is yet to be determined. According to an email from Section 2 football coordinator Bob Dorrance that accompanied the schedule release, the Section 2 Athletic Council will hold a vote in June to determine whether those two classifications will hold four-team or eight-team playoffs.
Should the four-team playoff format be adopted, Week 8 of the regular season will include crossover games that would not affect postseason seeding. If the eight-team format is adopted, those playoffs will begin in Week 8, with non-playoff teams participating in crossover games.
Classes AA and D will continue to use four-team playoffs this year, while Class B will use an eight-team format.
Class A has used a four-team playoff in each of the last two seasons. In both years, the Capital Division finished with tiebreakers determining at least one of its playoff spots. In both 2021 and 2022, Amsterdam was eliminated via quarter points tiebreakers.
The season starts with Week 0 on the weekend of Sept. 1-2, with Week 1 on Sept. 8-9.

MOVING UP, MOVING DOWN
There are a number of teams moving either up or down in classification in 2023.
Class AA will gain Ballston Spa, which is moving up from Class A, while Bethlehem drops from Class AA to Class A. Bethlehem will join the Capital Division alongside Amsterdam, Averill Park, Troy, Columbia and La Salle, while Mohonasen will move over to the Grasso Division alongside Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake, South Glens Falls, Queensbury, Ballston Spa, Niskayuna and Albany — which opted again to play down in Class A without being eligible for the postseason.
Broadalbin-Perth, Ichabod Crane, Mechanicville/Hoosic Valley and Cairo-Durham/Catskill all move up to Class B. The former three were in Class C last season, while Cairo-Durham/Catskill played in Class D without postseason eligiblity.
Corinth moves up to Class C after being a non-playoff Class D program in 2022, while Class D sees the addition of Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton and Stillwater, both of which drop down from Class C.
SUPER BOWL REMATCHES
Last year’s championship games from classes AA, A, B and D will all see regular-season rematches.
Christian Brothers Academy and Shenendehowa, who have met in the last two Class AA Super Bowls, will meet in a Week 5 game at CBA. The Brothers, two-time defending Class AA champions, are on three-year probation from Section 2 for a violation of NYSPHSAA’s Recruitment and Undue Influence rule, and are prohibited from competing in Week 0 in 2023.
The earliest Super Bowl rematch comes in Week 2, when Niskayuna will host Averill Park in a game that should also be the first football game on Niskayuna’s renovated field. Cambridge/Salem will also host Chatham in a Class D Super Bowl rematch in Week 2.
The Class B title game rematch comes in Week 6, when two-time defending champion Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk hosts Lansingburgh.
With Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton moving down, there’s no Class C Super Bowl rematch on the docket, though Week 5 will see a matchup between the 2022 Class C and Class D champs when Lake George/Warrensburg/Bolton visits Cambridge/Salem.
