SCHENECTADY — Schenectady County has a new web address.
The county on Tuesday announced it has changed its website to schenectadycountyny.gov, a move that requires stricter security controls since .gov domains are available only to U.S.-based government agencies.
County email addresses have also been switched to the schenectadycountyny.gov domain.
Those that type in the former schenectadycounty.com web address will be redirected to the new site, but the county plans to phase-out the use of the former website online, in publications and other public-facing materials over time.
The move is designed to bolster cybersecurity in an “ever-evolving technological landscape,” according to Rich Ruzzo, a county legislator representing Schenectady, who chairs the county’s Technology & Communications Committee.
“Upgrading to a .gov domain helps us stay ahead of the curve by making it harder for cybercriminals to impersonate our employees, websites, and emails, while also safeguarding sensitive information, and building public trust in the content available at schenectadycountyny.gov,” Ruzzo said in a statement.
