Troy, Ichabod Crane defend Section 2 softball championships

HIGH SCHOOLS – Second-seeded Troy broke open a close game with three runs in the sixth inning to earn a 6-2 win over No. 1-seeded South Glens Falls in the Section 2 Class A final Thursday at Luther Forest Athletic Fields.

UMass Lowell-bound Olivia DeCitise belted a two-run home run over the right-center field fence and also struck out eight from the pitching circle to lead Troy (19-4), which defended its sectional title. Nadia Mulnio and Vanessa Quinn also had RBIs for the Flying Horses, who will play the Section 3 champion in a state regional game at 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 1, at Carrier Park in East Syracuse. Jill Capozucca doubled and drove in a run for South Glens Falls.

In Class B, top-seeded Ichabod Crane also defended its title over the same opponent as last year in a 9-4 win over Glens Falls. Emma Scheitinger homered and drove in three runs, while Meredith Garofalo had a solo home run for Ichabod Crane (20-1). Lily Canale had an RBI double, and Jaelyn Graham had two hits, including a double, for Glens Falls. The Riders will play the Section 3 champion in a state quarterfinal at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at Carrier Park.

Emily Mesick struck out eight, walked one and threw a three-hitter to lead top-seeded Chatham (19-2) to a 6-1 win over Greenwich in the Class C final. Olive Mountain went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Panthers, who will play Section 10’s Saint Lawrence in a regional final at a date and time to be determined.

Sophia Keayes pitched a three-hitter, and top-seeded Salem scored four times in the third inning to earn a 4-2 win over Adirondack League-foe Argyle. Salem plays the Section 7 champion in a state quarterfinal on Saturday, June 3, at 4:30 p.m. at Luther Forest Athletic Fields.
