SCHENECTADY – Schenectady Mayor Gary McCarthy and his Democratic primary challenger, City Council President Marion Porterfield, debated Thursday night at SUNY Schenectady’s Carl B. Taylor Auditorium.
The event is co-sponsored by The Daily Gazette was the first opportunity for city voters to hear from the two city leaders vying for the Democratic nomination in November’s mayoral general election. The newspaper’s editor Miles Reed moderated the showdown between the three-term incumbent and the longtime city representative, with questions on a wide range of city topics asked by a slate of local journalists, including Gazette columnist Andrew Waite, Times Union Schenectady reporter Paul Nelson, CBS6 reporter Emma Quinn and WAMC’s Lucan Willard.

The primary is June 27. The winner moves on to the general election and a match with Republican mayoral candidate Matt Nelligan.
