TOWN OF JOHNSTOWN — A man has been arrested, accused of holding a victim against her will over more than a day and stabbing her with a screwdriver before the person could finally escape, New York State Police said Monday.

The victim suffered injuries described as severe and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Luis A. Gonzalez, 56, now faces charges of first-degree kidnapping and second-degree attempted murder, police said. Troopers identified Gonzalez as from Johnstown. Arrest paperwork filed in court also list him with an Amsterdam address.

The initial call came in just after 8 p.m. Friday to an address on Route 67 in Johnstown for a report of a stabbing, police said.

Police soon determined the victim had been held against her will by Gonzalez at a nearby property since the previous morning, police said.

Gonzalez is accused of threatening the victim with multiple weapons and stabbing the victim multiple times, police said.

Gonzalez is specifically accused of holding the woman against her will starting at about 9 a.m. Thursday, then stabbing her with a screwdriver multiple times and striking her in the head with a rock, causing serious physical injury, according to allegations filed in court.

Gonzalez is also accused of using chains, ropes, belts and other restraints to prevent her from escaping, according to the allegations.

The victim escaped as Gonzalez left the area, police said.

Police also determined the victim had an active order of protection against Gonzalez. The order was put in place in March and was to last a year, according to the allegations

In addition to the kidnapping and attempted murder counts, Gonzalez faces one count of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and aggravated criminal contempt, both felonies.

The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, Amsterdam Police Department and the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office assisted in searching for Gonzalez.

Troopers took him into custody Saturday in Lake Pleasant. He was arraigned in Johnstown Town Court and ordered held.
