Country Living, an American lifestyle and home magazine, named Schenectady, Saratoga Springs and Lake George among the best small towns in New York for an idyllic getaway.

The article, published in June, lists 42 “small, charming towns (and picturesque villages, hamlets, and even some sweet cities)” throughout New York for readers to visit and find their “oasis.”

Schenectady tops the list at No. 1 with a complimentary mention of State Street.

“Schenectady boasts a bustling main street, complete with classic architecture and a well-preserved street clock,” wrote Rose Marie Walano.

Central Park was also highlighted.

“Perhaps its loveliest place for a stroll would be the Central Park Rose Garden, which features 4,000 rose bushes, a tiered fountain, and even a babbling brook,” the article said.

Saratoga Springs and Lake George also made the list, placing No. 23 and No. 26, respectively. Saratoga Springs was lauded for its architecture, natural springs, shopping and the Saratoga Race Course.

“Kentucky, eat your heart out!” the article said.

Lake George was also praised for its “endless” recreation options, including parasailing, hiking and horseback riding, as well as Prospect Mountain, Splashwater Kingdom and the town’s two forts — Fort William Henry and Fort Ticonderoga.

The rest of the list included, among others, towns and villages like Montauk on Long Island, Beacon, and Sleepy Hollow.
