BROADALBIN — The Broadalbin-Perth boys’ soccer team opened its Foothills Council campaign in grand fashion.
Powered by Jack Holland’s hat trick, the Patriots romped to a 12-0 victory over Hudson Falls Tuesday afternoon at Patriot Field at Broadalbin-Perth High School.
“It was a great team win,” first-year Broadalbin-Perth coach Juan Garzon said. “Everybody worked hard, and it was good to be able to give everybody time. We are getting more and more players involved in the game. Give credit to Hudson Falls. They worked hard and never stopped working.”
Broadalbin-Perth (1-0 Foothills, 1-1 overall) established its signature short passing game early in the opening half, developing runs and producing shots on net.
With 9:49 off the clock, Alex Rogers received a clearing pass out of the defense before racing toward goal and firing a shot from 20 yards that settled into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.
Antonio D’Aniello converted a penalty kick to push the lead to 2-0 before Rogers delivered his second score off a through ball from Ezekiel Boehme for a 3-0 lead with 17:56 left in the opening half.
Just under a minute later, D’Aniello netted his second goal of the half with a long shot that was redirected off a Hudson Falls defender and past goalkeeper Mason Leerkes to put the score at 4-0.
Holland closed out the first half scoring for BP with goals with 6:19 and 3:11 remaining in the opening half to make it 6-0 at the break.
Nine minutes into the second half, Holland received a long clearing pass out of the defense and beat Leerkes one-on-one to complete his hat trick and stake the Patriots to a 7-0 advantage.
The Patriots remained in control of the game and added two goals apiece from Boehme and Massimo Pasquarelli and one from Steve Scarpa to close out the victory.
Garzon said he was pleased with the progress of the team after a 6-2 non-league loss to Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in its season opener.
“It was a loss, but after that game, we worked on the things that didn’t work that day and things that we needed to fix,” he said. “They came out today and did a great job, but there were some little things that we need to still work on.”
For the match, Broadalbin-Perth outshot Hudson Falls 27-1 with 12 corner kicks to one for the Tigers. Leerkes collected 13 saves in the season opener for Hudson Falls (0-1, 0-1), while Aiden Gladman had one save for the Patriots.
Prior to the kick off of Tuesday’s game, the Patriots honored coach Brian Henry, who retired after the 2022 season.
“We dedicated this game to him for all his years of coaching,” Garzon said. “Coach Brian Henry has done a great job with them. They have a process already and I want to build a little bit on what they have with a quicker game.”
Broadalbin-Perth will look for its second Foothills Council win of the season when it travels to play Glens Falls Thursday, while Hudson Falls will host Amsterdam on Thursday.
