CLIFTON PARK – A contractor from Malta has been arrested, accused of taking more than $18,000 for work never started, New York State Police said this week.

Dakota Smith, 28, of Malta, was arrested Wednesday and charged with third-degree grand larceny and first-degree scheme to defraud, felonies.

The investigation began in June as troopers received a complaint from a Clifton Park resident about a possible contractor scam, troopers said.

The investigation then determined that Smith, as the owner of DAS Builders & Remodeling LLC and acting as a contractor, agreed with the victim in November 2022 to complete a home renovation project, police said.

Smith then collected a deposit of more than $18,000, but then failed to start the work or purchase the materials. He was also unable to return the victim’s deposit, police said.

Smith surrendered on Wednesday. He was processed and released to appear in court later.
