Fitz leads Red Foxes to victory over Saints

Marist sophomore Rachele Fitz showed Sunday why she was the preseason pick for Metro Atlantic Athlet

LOUDONVILLE — Marist sophomore Rachele Fitz showed Sunday why she was the preseason pick for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Year.

Fitz pumped in 27 points, converting 11 of 12 free-throw attempts, to lead the Red Foxes to a 79-70 victory over Siena, extending Marist’s winning streak to 11 games.

The Red Foxes (21-1, 11-0 MAAC) opened up an 18-point lead with 13:35 left, and held off the Saints down the stretch.

The loss kept the Saints winless (0-6) at Alumni Recreation Center this season, and dropped them to 3-8 in the league and 7-14 overall.

Shondaya Burrell tied her season high with 25 points for the Saints before fouling out. The Saints were whistled for 26 team fouls, and both Burrell and Laura Menty fouled out of the game.
