Starr struck: Colgate crushes Union, 8-0

Union down

It was a historic night at Colgate's Starr Rink. For Union, it was for all the wrong reasons.

Senior goalie Mark Dekanich set several records, senior forward Tyler Burton continued to dominate the Dutchmen and Colgate coach Don Vaughan became the school's all-time winningest coach Saturday as the Raiders continued their mastery of Union at Starr, posting an 8-0 ECAC Hockey win.

With four games remaining, Union (8-6-4 ECACH, 13-11-5 overall) fell out of the final ECACH tournament first-round bye berth. Cornell moved ahead of the Dutchmen with its 7-1 win over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Dutchmen are in a three-way tie with Harvard and Yale, who both won Saturday.

Dekanich set a league and school record by extending his shutout streak to 212 minutes, 14 seconds. The old ECACH mark of 198:44 was held by Union's Trevor Koenig in 1996-97, while Kurt Brown had the Colgate record of 196:05 in 1961-62. Dekanich tied Brown for the team record with his third straight shutout.

Burton had two goals and an assist. He has 11 goals and seven assists against Union.

Vaughan earned his 252nd career win at Colgate. He passed the late Terry Slater, who coached the Raiders from 1977-92.

All of that added up to the Raiders (7-74, 13-12-5) improving to 16-1 against the Dutchmen at Starr since Union's program went to Division I in 1991. Colgate handed Union its worst loss at Starr since a 9-3 victory Feb. 19, 2000. The Dutchmen have been outscored, 78-31, at Starr.

Union's only victory at Starr came Feb. 27, 1998, a 6-0 triumph.
