Siena runs past Boise State

Alex Franklin clicks for 30 points and 18 rebounds as Siena throttles WAC leader Boise State, 93-70,

Sophomore power forward Alex Franklin had a career night as the Siena Saints beat Boise State at its own game by running the Broncos off their own floor on Saturday night.

Franklin had 30 points and 18 rebounds in the Saints’ 93-70 victory at the Taco Bell Arena, where fans began to lose interest as early as the 8:40 mark of the second half, after Siena had taken a 74-55 lead on Edwin Ubiles layup.

The Saints improved to 17-10 with two Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference games left in the regular season and avoided their first three-game losing streak of the season.

The Western Athletic Conference-leading Broncos (20-7) capped a wild first half with a dunk by Matt Nelson that cut Siena’s lead to

45-40, and although Boise State kept it close in the opening minutes of the second half, Siena never trailed in the game and used a 10-2 lead to take the 74-55 lead.

Ubiles scored six points during that stretch, including a basket in transition to make it 74-55. Boise State never got closer than 13 of the lead after that.

Franklin’s previous best single-game scoring output was 27 points, and his best rebounding game had been 13.

The Saints hit the 90-point mark for the third time this season, and did it without making a three-pointer in the second half.

Instead, they got the running game going. Franklin scored off a steal by Ronald Moore, then Kenny Hasbrouck came up with back-to-back steals and layups to give Siena a 54-46 lead with 16:44 left in the game.

A dunk by Ubiles off another steal by Hasbrouck and a basket inside from Moore made it 62-51 with 13:05 left.

Ubiles finished with 22 points, and Hasbrouck scored 19.

Siena held Tyler Tiedeman, the third-best three-point shooter in the country at 49.6 percent, to 12 points before he fouled out with just over two minutes to play.
