An Altamont man has been accused by town police of assaulting an officer after being found standing in the middle of Route 20 on Sunday night.
Police said they responded about 6:10 p.m. to a report of a man obstructing traffic on Route 20 near the Princetown town line and found an intoxicated Jonathan D. Brainard, 26, of 3770 Western Turnpike, standing in the middle of the road. When Brainard was approached by the first responding officer, police said, he became belligerent and struck the officer. During the ensuing struggle, the officer suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Albany Medical Center, where he was treated and released.
Brainard was charged with second-degree assault, first-degree criminal impersonation, third-degree criminal mischief, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned in Town Court and sent to the Albany County jail without bail. He is scheduled to return to court Thursday.
