Catamounts hand Engineers 4-1 loss

Vermont scored three unanswered goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Rensselaer P

Vermont scored three unanswered goals in the third period to break a 1-1 tie and defeat Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, 4-1, Saturday in the season opener for both squads.

The Catamounts have won the last four meetings against the Engineers.

Chris Atkinson scored off an assist by Josh Burrows to break the 1-1 tie, Brayden Irwin gave the Catamounts a 3-1 advantage just over three minutes later on a power play. Justin Milo capped the scoring for Vermont at the 11:36 mark of the third, after he found the puck on his backhand and centered it for a shot over the blocker of the Engineers goalie for the 4-1 margin.

The Engineers struck first as freshman Patrick Cullen scored 17:33 into the game. Sophomores Scott Halpern and Chase Polacek had the assists.

Milo scored 1:17 into the second period to tie the game, 1-1.

RPI hosts the U.S. under-18 team today at 5 p.m.

SCHENECTADY — Shannon Bellefeuille set up two goals as Vermont scored three times in the second period to beat the Dutchwomen in a non-conference game.

Union goalie Lundy Day turned in a spectacular first period, stopping 18 shots in holding the Catamounts scoreless. The Dutchwomen killed off four Vermont power plays in the first period, including a two-skater advantage.

Emilie Arseneault scored the goal for 0-4-0 Union.
