Dan Meyers made 25 saves for the shutout as UMass beat RPI, 6-0, in a non-conference hockey game Tuesday at Houston Field House.
The Minutemen (2-1), coming off a victory over nationally ranked North Dakota 10 days ago, scored twice within 83 seconds in the first period. Chris Davis opened the scoring at 16:15, squirting a rebound past a sprawling Mathias Lange. UMass increased its lead when Douglas Kublin, crashing from the blue line, blasted a one-timer from the top of the slot at 18:38 after teammate James Marcou left a loose puck after an RPI player tied him up.
UMass stretched it to 3-0 at 16:14 of the second period when Will Ortiz, charging down the left side of the slot, sent a perfect pass to his right to Danny Hobbs, who had beaten his defender and one-timed it past a helpless Lange. RPI was stymied on two close-in chances a minute earlier during a long stretch in the UMass zone.
Davis scored his second goal of the game to make it 4-0 at 6:35 of the third period. Casey Wellman and Topher Bevis added goals in the final period, with Bevis’ coming seven seconds into a Minutemen power play.
The Minutemen outshot RPI, 35-25.
The Engineers fell to 0-4 for the first time since 1995-96, when they began the season 0-5.
