Turnovers hurt Saints in 84-61 loss

Boston University scored the first seven points of the game, and never trailed, in beating Siena, 8

Boston University scored the first seven points of the game, and never trailed, in beating Siena, 84-61, in a non-conference women’s basketball game Thursday night.

Jesyka Burks-Wiley led the Terriers with 20 points and sevenrebounds.

Siena’s Heather Stec tied a career-high with 18 points.

Siena (0-3) looked like a young team in its first road game of the season, turning the ball over 10 times in the first 10 minutes. The Terriers took advantage and scored 16 points off turnovers in the first half. BU dominated the glass, with a 19-11 advantage, including 10 offensive boards.

The Terriers (2-0) ran off makes and misses and suffocated the Saints on defense. BU shot 47 percent from the field in the first half, 45 percent on three-pointers.

Three of its players scored in double figures including Burks-Wiley (20), Amarac Umez-Eronini (18) and Kristi Dini (14).

The Saints went on a 9-5 run in the last 3:07 of the half behind a three-pointer by Sara Parnell, two foul shots by Sarah Fullmer and two layups by Cristina Centeno. But BU’s Dini hit a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Siena went to senior captain Stec early and often in the second half. She scored 10 points in the first five minutes to cut the Terriers’ lead to 50-41. But that was as close as it got before BU pulled away for good. BU outscored Siena, 21-7, in a 10-minute span to take a 71-48 with five minutes left.

Siena shot 34 percent from the field in the second half, but committed only four turnovers, down from 13 in the first half.

Siena returns to action Monday, playing Eastern Michigan in Ypsilanti, Mich., at 7 p.m.
