A family is belatedly grieving the loss of a loved one after police initially misidentified his body in a wrecked car.

State police say 19-year-old Phil Rogers was killed early Saturday after the car he was driving in Clifton Park went off the road, hit a tree and rolled over. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

However, police identified the driver as Rogers’ friend, Josh Lavigne, after tracing the car’s registration to Lavigne and finding a wallet and ID belonging to him in it.

Rogers would sometimes drive Lavigne’s car. The mixup wasn’t discovered until about nine hours later, when Rogers’ grandmother — who had been notified of the accident — received a call from Lavigne.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
