Two rescued after car crashes onto railroad tracks

Two women stuck in an overturned vehicle on railroad tracks along Route 5 in the town of Amsterdam w

Two women stuck in an overturned vehicle on the railroad tracks along Route 5 were saved by a passerby before a freight train barreled through and destroyed the car Thursday night.

Montgomery County Undersheriff Jeffery T. Smith said Galway Fire Chief Chad Jazwinski was driving on Route 5 near Mohawk Drive when he spotted the overturned car about 5:35 p.m. Smith said the driver of the car was headed east with a passenger when she unsuccessfully tried to avoid a deer in the road.

"During that attempt, it caused the vehicle to overturn and it came to rest on the railroad tracks," Smith said.

Jazwinski got both of the passengers out of the vehicle, and they escaped with only scrapes and bruises, Smith said.

"While they are on the side of the road, a train came through. The vehicle's totalled," Smith said.

Jazwinski could not be reached Friday morning.

Smith said the freight train went on its way after an investigation.
