For the second game in a row, the Siena women had a hard time scoring down the stretch.

At least their opponent responded in kind, this time.

Merrick Volpe scored her only points of the game with two free throws with 20.6 seconds left to preserve a 58-54 win for the Saints to stop a three-game losing streak. Siena improved to 2-2 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference and 3-10 overall.

Siena senior Heather Stec scored 17 points in the second half and finished with a career-high 23, along with 10 rebounds.

She made two free throws with 6:05 left to give the Saints a 56-47, and Siena didn’t score the rest of the way, except for Volpe’s free throws. It was Siena’s first game after being outscored, 13-0, in the final 4:36 against Saint Peter’s, and losing by four.

“We had a long talk about it, and we watched the entire game over again and picked certain things out,” Stec said. “One of the big things was our intensity level wavers throughout games. Today, we really made an effort to keep the same intensity, keep bringing it, keep attacking the hoop, and defensively, making stops.

“These games are so important, you can’t let them slip away.”

Cintella Spotwood made a three-pointer with 22.4 seconds left to bring Rider within 56-54 with 22.4 seconds left, and Volpe was fouled immediately for a one-and-one. She swished both.
