State and local police are cracking down on impaired drivers this holiday weekend, authorities said.
Maj. William S. Sprague, Troop G commander, said police will be out in force through Sunday.
“Driving while intoxicated isn’t worth the tremendous risk. No matter your age, if you’ve had too much to drink, you’d better find a safe and sober ride home or your chances of arrest are high,” Sprague said.
During the Independence Day holiday period in 2007, police reported 200 traffic-related fatalities. Of those, 44 percent involved a driver or motorcycle rider with a blood alcohol content of .08 percent or higher.
Sprague said state police will mount extra patrols for Saturday’s Independence Day celebration at the Empire State Plaza. He said stopping, standing or parking on Interstate-787 is not allowed. Any vehicles parked on I-787 or the exit or entrance ramps will be immediately towed and ticketed.
