Woman escapes from kidnapper, runs to safety in Greenfield

A young woman was “brave and resourceful” in escaping from a kidnapper who had ordered her to disrob

A young woman was “brave and resourceful” in escaping from a kidnapper who had ordered her to disrobe at gunpoint on a rural road Thursday night, according to police.

Saratoga Springs police Lt. Gregory Veitch said the woman was abducted from the area of Walnut Street and Grand Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. as she walked alone and spoke on her cellphone.

“We received a call from her friend that they had been talking and she was expected to arrive at his home but had not,” he said.

Veitch would not say whether the friend heard the actual abduction as he spoke to the woman. Veitch said the woman was not sexually assaulted by the kidnapper because she escaped before that could happen. The woman was taken to Saratoga Hospital after the incident. Veitch said she was not seriously injured during the ordeal.

As police were questioning the friend, state police and Saratoga County sheriff’s deputies were called to a home on Howe Road in Greenfield where a resident reported that a naked woman screaming for help had come to the door.

“The residents of the Howe Road home called police and helped the woman, who was identified as the person reported missing in Saratoga Springs,” Veitch said.

He said the woman reported she was approached from behind, hit on the head and then dragged into the sliding side door of a minivan and driven away from the area.

“The suspect threatened the victim with a handgun and ordered her to take off all of her clothes,” he said.

The woman reported she escaped from the van and ran to the Howe Road residence.

“The van was moving when she managed to get the door open and escape,” he said.

Police said the suspect was driving a dark colored, possibly blue, minivan. He is described as 25 to 35 years old, white or Hispanic with a chubby face and close cropped hair.

The investigation is continuing and anyone with information may call Saratoga Springs police, state police or the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Department.
