This is a tough season to pick the best in dance, as the pickings are slim. With cutbacks in state funding and audiences dwindling, theaters are reducing their offerings. But here are some of the highlights in this slender fall lineup:

Parson Dance with the East Village Opera Company at The Egg in Albany — This popular modern dance troupe, which will be dancing a “rockpra” with live and recorded music and video projections, never fails to please. Sept. 24.

American Ballet Theatre at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson. One of the top ballet companies in the world will offer three world premieres by choreograpers Azure Barton, Benjamin Millepied and Alexei Ratmansky. Oct. 2 to 4

Emio Greco/PC:[purgatoria] POPOPERA at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Mass. — This contemporary dance ensemble will be strapped to shiny black electric guitars in an display of hard-hitting virtuosity. Oct. 10.

Pilobolus at Mahaiwe Performing Arts Center, Great Barrington, Mass. — This company is more athletic than dancy. Either way, the Pils, as they are known, are always full of fun surprises. Oct. 11.

Rioult at Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Tivoli. A favorite at Kaatbaan, Rioult combines astute musicality with expressive, heartfelt dancing. Oct. 24 and 25.
