Hunter rescued from swamp by firefighters

Emergency personnel rescued a man from a swamp off Maple Avenue in Glenville on Sunday.

Emergency personnel rescued a man from a swamp off Maple Avenue on Sunday.

The man had been hunting small game in a wooded area off Maple Avenue running along the Mohawk River between the rail yard and Siler Labs when he ran into trouble, according to Glenville Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Janik.

"He was traversing through swampy area, didn't realize how deep the swamp was and got stuck in the mud," he said.

The incident happened just before 5 p.m. The hunter, whose identity was not available from authorities, called his wife, who in turn called police.

Officers contacted the man and went to about 75 yards from where he was. The Alplaus and Thomas Corners fire departments also responded to the scene.

While the firefighters were en route, the man was able to free himself and started to make his way out.

Firefighters assisted him in getting to dry land.

The hunter, who had a valid license, suffered minor hypothermia and was very cold, wet and exhausted from traveling through the swamp, Janik said.
