A longtime Proctors volunteer was killed late Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck

A longtime Proctors volunteer was killed late Saturday night after being struck by a pickup truck.

Charlotte M. Gallo, 78, was crossing Broadway near Stratton Plaza just before 11:30 p.m. when she was struck by a Dodge pickup truck traveling south away from downtown, according to police spokesman Sgt. Eric Clifford.

Gallo was transported to Ellis Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver, whose name police have not yet released, has not been charged. Police are still investigating the accident but alcohol and excessive speed do not appear to be factors, according to Clifford.

Proctors Chief Executive Officer Philip Morris said Gallo worked in the gift shop.

“Our staff adored her. They thought she was great. She was dependable. She was friendly. She was sweet.”

Gallo had received a Volunteer of the Year Award from Proctors for her work in the gift shop, according to the Proctors Web site.

Morris did not know how long Gallo had been volunteering.

“It’s clearly a terrible tragedy.”
