Homeschoolers deserve a shot at sports teams

Imagine knowing a high school athlete would become a Heisman Trophy winner; wouldn’t you want him to play for your school district? It’s a good thing Tim Tebow, Heisman Trophy winner, grew up in Florida. As a homeschooler, he was allowed to play public school sports. There are many great student athletes in New York that are not allowed to use their talents in public school system because they are homeschooled.

School supervisors frequently say that if homeschoolers are not focused on the same goals such as keeping grade point average, then they should not be allowed to participate in their school sports. Parents of public school competitors often argue that gifted homeschoolers could take positions on the team that could go to a child from a public school.

I feel that homeschooled children should have the right to try out for public school sports, and be required to abide by the rule of maintaining proper grade point average in order to participate. The athlete with the greater talent, homeschooled or not, deserves the position. Taxes are being paid by homeschooler’s parents. It’s only right that homeschoolers be allowed to utilize the programs their parents are paying for. Even if they were allowed to take part in school sports, most of the taxes paid by their parents will be used by students attending public school.

There are many homeschoolers in New York state that would greatly appreciate the opportunity to at least try out for a public school sport. I hope some day New York will follow Florida’s example in allowing homeschoolers to participate in public school sports. You never know, the next Heisman Trophy winner could be a homeschooler from our state.
