Young artists from Saratoga Springs schools will play a big role in this year’s SaratogaArtsFest, with events in the Beekman Street Art District and the Arthur Zankel Music Center at Skidmore College.

On Sunday, in the Beekman Street Art District, Saratoga Springs High School students will be participating in the first “Trashion,” showing off clothing they’ve created from recycled and re-used materials such as magazines, newspapers, ribbons, garbage bags, packing materials, duct tape, Pokeman cards and candy wrappers.

“I have 34 students participating, with 22 outfits,” says Kate Santamaria, an art teacher at the high school. “Most of them will be the models, some of them have recruited friends.”

At 1 p.m., the students will stroll down Beekman Street, then the actual “Trashion” show will take place from 2 to 3 p.m. in a tent at 30 Beekman, next to Girard Stoneware. The outfits will remain on display in the tent from 3 to 5 p.m.

During ArtsFest, the Saratoga Springs Schools Student Art Exhibition will be on view in the lobby of the Zankel Center.

It’s the first time that the student exhibit has been shown at Artsfest, says Kathleen Lucey, visual arts logistics coordinator for SaratogaArtsfest. “We get to salute and celebrate local young talent, and they learn more about ArtsFest and what’s happening in the community.”

Forty-two works by 42 students, from kindergarten through high school, were selected for the show.
