Schenectady Muny Pro-Am: Some of area's best haven't forgotten their roots

“If I could build a golf course in my backyard, it would be just like Schenectady Municipal Golf Cou

“If I could build a golf course in my backyard, it would be just like Schenectady Municipal Golf Course,” said Glens Falls Country Club assistant pro Jack Madej, who grew up playing the scenic layout almost every day.

“I grew up right off the fourth hole. I must have played this course hundreds of times,” said Cobleskill Golf & Country Club head pro Paul Jaycox, another Schenectady native who holds Muny in high regard. “It’s great being here. I remember my mom yelling for me to come home at night. [Former Muny head pro] Bobby Haggerty was the first pro I ever knew, He was the epitome of a golf professional, and he taught me everything I know.”

Local club professionals and amateurs helped celebrate Muny’s 75th anniversary by competing in the Schenectady Municipal 75th Anniversary Pro-Am Tuesday. Most of the club pros had ties to the Muny layout, and relished being part of the celebration.

“I worked here for 10 years,” said Mohawk Golf Club assistant pro Matt Daley. “I started working here when I was a senior in high school. Bobby Haggerty eventually promoted me to his assistant, and I served in that role for six years. This feels like home to me. I grew up here and spent a lot of my spare time playing golf here. I feel I know the people here.”

Madej’s Glens Falls Country Club pro-am team, which actually was comprised of mostly Schenectady-area players, won the event with a 189. Each team had a club pro and four amateurs. Only the lowest two gross scores and the low net score on each hole counted toward the team scoring, and the club pros had their own scoring pool.

Madej shot a one-over-par 73 on his own ball, while amateurs Brandon Haase and Hank Haase of Mohawk Golf Club, Brian Koen and course architecht Robert McNeil, who is in the process of drawing up plans for redesigning parts of the course, rounded out the team.

“Hank just played great,” said Madej. “He shot a 70 on his own ball, but he could have shot in the low 60s. He could have shot his age [67] today with no problem. We all played pretty well, but Hank was definitely the star.”

“I had a pretty good round,” said Haase, who birdied the third, seventh, 12th and 16th holes. “This was a lot of fun.”

Low pro with a 68 was Mohawk Golf Club head pro Jeremy Kerr, who also grew up playing Muny.

“I grew up playing here. In fact, I lived only 10 minutes away on Wright Avenue. I used to walk up here and play with Matt Daley almost every day. I remember playing my high school matches here for Linton. I would say my favorite hole here is No. 2, because it’s a risk-reward type of hole. If you really bomb your tee shot, you can go for the green in two, but if you get too close to the rough in the right, you have a much tougher shot.”

Kerr registered six birdies on the day.

Schenectady’s Craig McLean, the first-year head pro at The Edison Club, is another player who has fond memories of Muny.

“I haven’t played here in some time, but I played it hundreds of times when I was just a kid. In fact, I came back to help celebrate the 50th anniversary, and my team won that pro-am. It’s nice to have another chance to celebrate an anniversary here.”
