Kovachick to vacate WNYT's 11 p.m. weather slot

Bob Kovachick, WNYT Television’s longtime chief meteorologist, will leave the station’s 11 p.m. news

Bob Kovachick, WNYT Television’s longtime chief meteorologist, will leave the station’s 11 p.m. news broadcast in early June.

Kovachick will still be on weather coverage during WNYT’s late afternoon and early evening news shows. He made the request to spend more time with his family.

“He’s been asking for a while,” said Stephen P. Baboulis, vice president and general manager of the Menands station.

“We’ve kind of resisted ... he’s been such a powerful force for our news operations, it’s hard to get to the point where you do that.”

Kovachick has been on the night shift as early evening and late night weather expert since he joined WNYT in 1988. He will now be seen on NewsChannel 13’s 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. weather broadcasts, and also do some reporting on environmental topics.

Weekend meteorologist Jason Gough will move into Kovachick’s late evening slot on weeknights.
