The New York State Junior Championship at McGregor Links Country Club — the only state-wide event held in the Capital Region this year — highlights a busy local junior golf schedule.

The Junior State Am will be played Aug. 1-3. The local qualifier for the junior boys will be held on July 6 at Town of Colonie Golf Course.

Area juniors have played a major role in the boys’ and girls’ championships. Twelve local boys have brought home the title in the New York State Junior Amateur, which began in 1931. Six local girls have won the New York State Junior Girls Amateur, including last year’s champ, Bailey Cocca of Latham.

The last time an area boy triumphed was in 2006, when current Siena College standout Don DeNyse III prevailed. Other local champions include Amsterdam’s John McCleary I 1959, the late club pro Pete Famiano of Schenectady in 1961, current teaching pro Ron Philo in 1962, Neil Spitalny of Colonie in 1967, Country Club of Troy’s E.J. Cardish in 1968, the late club pro Bill Gormley of Ballston Spa in 1969, Bob Royak of Guilderland in 1979, perennial Mohawk Golf Club Member-Guest champion Ben Bates of Schenectady in 1967, Ben Eldridge of Ballston Spa in 1999, Dennis Gosier of Saratoga Springs in 2000 and Marco Poccia, also of Saratoga Springs, in 2001.

Cocca, who has won the last two New York State Girls Junior Amateur titles, is one of four local women with multiple state junior crowns. Sara Jane Stuhler of Amsterdam won in both 1969 and 1970, while former LPGA standout Dottie Pepper of Saratoga Springs, now a golf analyst for NBC Sports, won in both 1961 an 1963. Kerri Murphy held on to the State Junior Girls crown from 1993 through 1995.

Other local winners were Gail Sykes of Ballston Spa in 1964 and Katelyn Mannix of Glens Falls in 2006.

Several other major events dot the junior schedule, including the Gazette’s Newspaper in Education Junior Golf Championship, slated for Aug. 3 at Schenectady Municipal. Seth Adams and Cocca won the 2010 boys’ and girls’ titles, respectively.

The Northeastern New York Pro-Junior event, which pits local juniors with club professionals in a team format, will be held at Pinehaven Country Club on June 27, while the New York State Junior PGA Championship is set for May 7-8.

The NENYPGA’s Junior Golf Tour, which runs throughout the summer in various age groups, also has a full schedule. Last year, Adams and Cocca were the respective points champions.

The top 10 boys on the point list were Adams of Schenectady, Louis Walsh of Clifton Park, John Young of Mechanicville, James Sullivan of Troy, Victor Fox of Delmar, William Mallia of Schenectady, Zachary Meade of Tupper Lake, Spencer Sautin of Ballston Lake, Taylor Bellemare of Hoosick Falls and D.J. Tozier of Clifton Park.

The top 10 girls on the point list were Cocca, Jessica Madsen of Slingerlands, Macy Raimo of Albany, Sarah Adamowski of Amsterdam, Hanna Valachovic of

Scotia, Vanessa Fassler of East Meredith, Jenn Murphy of Clifton Park, Lauren Kelleher of Queensbury, Hennier Lachell of Waterford and Haejin Hwang of Slingerlands.
