If you were getting a new pet would you go to a breeder or a shelter? A lot of people would say breeder because they think shelter animals are hurt or broken. The truth is often they are just like any other animal.

Shelters have animals of every breed, shape, size, color and age. You can find cats, dogs, reptiles, horses, birds, farm animals and many more. They have everything from the smallest baby lizards to the tallest horses.

Adoption prices are a lot lower than what you would pay a breeder. At some shelters you could get an older animal for free. Like anywhere else the younger and more exotic the animals is, the more expensive it will be.

Many of the animals you find at shelters have been abused, abandoned or neglected. Some of the animals have been so badly abused that they have lost limbs or senses, but don’t let that stop you from adopting. Many people believe shelter animals are sweeter and more loving because they know how lucky they are to have a kind, loving home.

If you aren’t sure about adopting or don’t know if that animal would make a good pet, ask if they offer a fostering program. When you foster, you get to make a big difference in an animal’s life without the commitment of a permanent pet.

If you don’t have time to foster or own a pet, you could consider volunteering or donating. Every minute you spend volunteering, and every penny you donate is appreciated by the workers and animals.

If you want a new best friend, consider giving a shelter animal a forever home. It may be one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.
