The New Jersey Devils will open their National Hockey League campaign without their No. 1 center, Travis Zajac, it was reported today on nhl.com.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello confirmed today that Zajac, who finished third on the club last season with 44 points (13 goals, 31 assists), will miss the first six to seven weeks of the season after undergoing surgery to repair his Achilles tendon. He suffered the injury Wednesday during an off-ice training workout.

Zajac is the brother of Union College forward Kelly Zajac.

The Devils open the season on Oct. 8 against the Philadelphia Flyers at Prudential Center.

The Devils' top minor league affiliate, the Albany Devils, begin their American Hockey League preseason on Sept. 27 at the Hartford Wolfpack.
