Union College announced today at a press conference that women's golf will become the 26th sport offered by the college.
The program will become a varsity sport and member of NCAA Division III in the fall of 2012. The team will play out of Mohawk Golf Club in Niskayuna and compete in the Liberty League. Mary Ellen Burt will be the team's head coach. She also coaches the Union women's basketball team.
“Union College is proud to now offer the sport of golf to prospective women's student-athletes,” said athletic director Jim McLaughlin. “We look forward to a future that brings quality students into this program."
“Union College Athletics has a rich and glorious history, dating back to 1860. So it is very fitting that our home course will be Mohawk Golf Club. This is a prestigious course that also has a magnificent history, and our student-athletes and their opponents will enjoy and appreciate every round. We appreciate president William Socha and the board of governors at Mohawk Golf Club for their efforts in this opportunity.”
