’Toppers get even with Cougars, 35-34

Fort Plain avenged its only Western Athletic Conference Northern Division loss of the season by hold

Fort Plain avenged its only Western Athletic Conference Northern Division loss of the season by holding off previously unbeaten Canaj­oharie, 35-34, in the league’s girls’ basketball headliner Tuesday night.

The Hilltoppers are tied with the Cougars at 8-1 in league play. Canajoharie is 10-3 overall, while Fort Plain is 9-3.

Abby Bayer scored seven of her team-high 11 points in the opening quarter, and Haley Kilmartin added five of her nine points in the final period, including 3-for-4 from the line, for Fort Plain.

Mackenzie Stahler poured in 18 points for the Cougars.

Southern Division leader Berne-Knox-Westerlo got a career-high 25 points and 16 rebounds from junior center Mary Salo in a 61-32 thrashing of Mekeel Christian Academy.

Liz Harvey backed up Salo with 14 points for the 5-0, 11-0 Bulldogs.

Emily Taplin’s 15 points topped Mekeel (3-3, 6-5).

Anna Bowersox tallied a career-high 22 points in Schoharie’s 46-44 win over Sharon Springs.

Lauren Archer chipped in with 10 points for 2-4, 3-8 Schoharie. Hannah Judd’s 23 points and Kaena Davenport’s 16 points topped the 0-5, 1-8 Spartans.

Duanesburg used a 14-4 second-quarter spurt to beat Middleburgh, 37-26.

Steph Rice scored 14 points for the 4-1, 7-2 Eagles. Middleburgh dropped to 2-4, 5-6.

The St. Johnsville/Oppenheim-Ephratah vs. Northville game was postponed because of poor weather conditions and rescheduled for Tuesday.

BIG 10

Ten players reached the scoring column as Troy (5-2, 10-3) topped Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons, 46-33.

The Flying Horses outscored the Golden Knights (0-7, 0-10), 22-4, in the second quarter.

Hannah Kutney netted 25 points, including 9-for-10 from the line, to propel Catholic Central over Amsterdam.

The Lady Crusaders (6-1, 7-6) also got 14 points from Madison Purcell. Cristiana Johnson’s 14 points led 2-4, 3-6 Amsterdam.

COLONIAL COUNCIL

Cohoes outscored Fonda-Fultonville, 33-11, in the first half and coasted past the Braves, 53-29.

Sarah McDonald scored 12 points to lead the 7-2, 8-3 Tigers. The Braves fell to 1-8 and 3-8.

FOOTHILLS COUNCIL

Cassie Broadhead’s 18 points sparked Scotia-Glenville over Broadalbin-Perth and kept the Tartans (6-0, 9-2) unbeaten in league play.

Sarah Johnson contributed 10 points for Scotia, which pulled out to a 19-4 halftime lead and closed with a 17-7 fourth-quarter run.

Kaitlin Wood scored 13 points for 1-5, 7-5 Broadalbin-Perth.

CHVL

Emily DeGeter popped in 12 points to carry Hawthorne Valley over Doane Stuart, 31-12.

Hawthorne Valley blanked Doane Stuart, 8-0, in the opening quarter.

Melissa Heffern scored 15 points, including her 1,000th career point, to propel Heatly (9-0, 10-1) over Berlin, 44-16.

Adriana Brown and Cayla Heffern added 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Hornets.

Emma Willard hammered Germantown, 45-22.

NON-LEAGUE

Emily Pertuccione’s 14 points helped Saratoga Springs (4-7) top Schenectady (1-11).

Ten players scored for the balanced Blue Streaks. C’Quaya Houghton’s eight points topped the Patriots.
