Jordan McBride finished off what his teammates started Tuesday night.
The star senior guard had a hand in Mechanicville’s final 12 points with eight free throws and a pair of assists as the Red Raiders rallied late for a 58-52 Colonial Council win over pesky Fonda-Fultonville.
“The last four or five games, I’ve gotten a box-and-one. It’s been so hard to get open,” McBride said after his 11-point effort. “I knew I wouldn’t get my shots in the fourth quarter, so I tried to rebound, push the ball and dish it off. I couldn’t look for my shot.”
McBride’s perfect free-throw performance and pinpoint feeds to his two cousins on the team came in a closing 13-4 run after the Braves moved ahead, 48-45, on Jarrett Ladd’s three-point basket.
“With a few minutes left, the game was just as much ours as it was theirs,” said Fonda-Fultonville coach Eric Wilson. “They finished, and we didn’t finish. There were probably three or four possessions in a row down the stretch where we came up empty.”
Ryan McBride scored a career-high 19 points, and sophomore Mike Cannizzo came off the bench and nailed four three-point baskets to help the Red Raiders (6-2, 8-3) maintain their share of first place in the Patriot Division with Cohoes. Nate Hatalsky added 11 points in Mechanicville’s second straight win following a three-game skid.
“I told the guys when they box-and-one Jordan, we need guys to knock down shots,” said Mechanicville coach Rian Richardson, whose team connected on 10 three-point baskets. “We shot the ball well tonight. We showed we’re not one-dimensional.”
Jordan McBride made his only field goal on Mechanicville’s first trip of the third quarter, a three-pointer that gave the hosts a 27-26 advantage.
“We held him [Jordan McBride] to one basket. We’ll take that,” said Wilson. “Some of their other guys got too many good looks.”
“Cannizzo’s threes were big, and Ryan McBride, he was humongous for us,” said Richardson. “He’s a second-year varsity guy. He’s capable of it.”
Ladd was a key figure in the Braves’ upset bid, supplying the one-on-one defense against Jordan McBride to go with 10 points.
“He’s a competitor. He’s not gifted with size, but he’s a tough kid. He’s strong and he never backs down,” Wilson said of Ladd, a senior guard. “He comes to me before we hand out the scouting report and says I want to cover their best guy.”
Ladd gave Fonda-Fultonville (2-6, 4-7) its first lead on a baseline jumper with two seconds left in the opening half, 26-24. His three-pointer had the Braves on top after three quarters, 43-42, before his second trey pushed them ahead again with 5:33 remaining in the contest.
“They work hard,” Jordan McBride said of the Braves. “They’re scrappy and they have shooters.”
Hatalsky sank a free throw to start Mechanicville’s 13-4 spurt, Jordan McBride made two to tie the game and then fed Ryan McBride for a layup. After Will Turner made a pair of tying free throws for the Braves, Jordan McBride set up Sam DeCelle for a layup and dropped in four foul shots for a 56-50 lead.
Kevin Twardzik’s jumper and two more free throws by Jordan McBride ended the game. Jordan McBride was held to a season-low nine points in Mechanicville’s previous game, a 66-50 win over Ichabod Crane.
“Everyone’s No. 1 goal is to shut him down,” Richardson said of Jordan McBride, who came in averaging 21.6 points per game. “That’s tough on a 17-year-old. It’s frustrating, but he’s handled it well.”
Twardzik led the Braves with 14 points and Turner had 12 to go with six rebounds, two blocks and two steals. The 6-foot-7 sophomore gave the Braves hope inside the final minute with a steal, but they a missed three-poiner and failed to cut into a 54-50 deficit.
“Early in the year, he was sitting back and letting things happen,” Wilson said of Turner. “Now he’s making things happen. He’s going at it harder and harder every night.”
