The numbers were nearly overwhelming.

Shenendehowa scored a record 314 points Saturday at Colonie High School in winning its seventh consecutive large-school wrestling championship, getting nine champions from 12 finalists and qualifying 14 wrestlers for this weekend’s state qualifier.

“Every kid won a match,” said Shenendehowa coach Rob Weeks after the Division I Class 1 (formerly Class A) event ended. “All of the matches that could have gone either way, we won them. That’s a good sign.

“I guess that’s how you have a great team, that you have kids wrestle well in big events. This is considered the third biggest event in the postseason.”

Included in the nine individual championships was the fifth in as many years for 11th-grader Nick Kelley, who had three first-period pins before scoring a 10-3 win over Columbia’s Brendan Morgan in the 132-pound finals.

“I think coach wants me to score as many points as I can,” said the unbeaten Kelley, who has 197 career wins. “Every match I want to go out there and wrestle hard, score points.”

Kelley’s daily workout partner and classmate, David Almaviva, followed with a third-period technical fall in the 138 finals for his first title after the second-place finishes.

“We just keep going hard against each other,” said Almaviva of his training workouts with Kelley. “Then when you get out there, you just want to keep pushing.”

Like all of the other winners, Almavia knows his work isn’t finished.

“I’ve got to keep training hard, because they’re going to come back strong next weekend,” he said of the other 138-pounders.

Eighth-grader Kevin Parker (99), junior Corey Ali (106), freshman Jesse Porter (113), 11th-grader Levi Ashley and seniors Tony Fusco (195), Will Mars (220) and Cole Lampman (285) also won finals.

“It nice to have kids do well who have struggled in close matches during the season,” Weeks said. “Joey Kromer probably lost more close matches during the year that he could have won. Today, he won some of those and got to the finals.”

It was Fusco’s third class title, the second for Lampman and Porter.

Columbia finished second for the third consecutive year,

The Blue Devils had champions in Kyle Greene (120), Matt Greene (126), Evan Wallace (145), Angelo Kress (152) and Brian Adriance (170), and will send a dozen to the DI state qualifier.

“We brought 14, and 12 placed, so I’m pleased with that,” said Columbia coach Anthony Servidone. “Now we’ve got to work hard this week, and get some people healthy.”

Matt Greene pinned Hunter Rumpf of Saratoga Springs to win his first title after a second, two third-place showings and a fifth at this event.

“It’s great, especially winning right after my brother did,” said the senior, now 44-0 this season. “I always want to wrestle well and represent the school and the wrestling program every time I go out there.”

Wallace also remained unbeaten, and now has two championships and three second-place finishes, and placed in the top six each of his six years on varsity.

Kress became a first-time winner with an overtime decision over Eli Cooks of Colonie, which had one champion — Josh Fuchs — and another finalist in Phil Bazicki. Kress got a takedown in the closing seconds of the first 30-second OT, and rode out Cooks for a 4-2 win

“I get a little more conservative,” said the sophomore, of ovetime matches. “I got that takedown and that was a big relief. It took off a lot of pressure. I knew I still had to ride him out.”

Fuchs was the only champion not to represent Shenendehowa or Columbia.
