Democratic Schenectady City Council candidate John Mootooveren has dropped out of the race for an open seat on the Council.
He made the announcement through his Facebook Page on Tuesday afternoon. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has supported me during my campaign. Let us continue to work together to make Schenectady the beautiful city that we envision it to be," he wrote. "After careful thought and consideration, I’ve decided to personally step aside from the City Council race this year. I do look forward to working with everyone in the near future."
Mootooveren had the backing of the city Democratic Committee last fall when he lost his race for the council by 39 votes. Since then, Marion Porterfield has emerged as his main Democratic rival, as she has garnered support from the Hamilton Hill neighborhood where she lives.
The council failed to appoint anyone to the seat, which created the need for an election, and the two Democrats had been poised for a primary this summer. Now Porterfield appears to be the likely Democratic candidate for this seat.
