My family and I recently paid a visit to Mr. Fuji Sushi, which is a Japanese restaurant that is located inside Stuyvesant Plaza on Western Avenue in Albany.
The first thing I noticed about the restaurant was the contemporary design. There were dim red, blue and green lamps hanging from the ceiling that cast multicolored shadows on the tables.
The restaurant was family-friendly and had a relaxing atmosphere.
We were greeted warmly by the manager and quickly seated on the first floor (there were two floors). The tables were made from dark wood and had lots of leg room underneath; the chairs were reasonably cushy, not overdone. We were handed black, leather menus.
For a beverage, I ordered apple juice, but they ran out and I only got half a glass, but because of the inconvenience, it was on the house.
The servers were attentive but not cloying.
The whole place was quite sanitary; I saw no crumbs at all.
The rest room was modernly designed and clean as well.
The servers cleared the table efficiently. They also provided us with thick, disposable napkins with a red rose design to clean up any messes made.
We were given a free appetizer to start our dinner off with: it was fish tempura, which was delicious, but slightly zingy.
We also had a salad with tomato, shredded carrots, cucumber and lettuce, topped off with a zesty, ginger dressing.
The miso soup included small, tender pieces of tofu and fresh seaweed; it was just right for a cold winter evening.
We ordered our meals and conversed while waiting. The background music was smooth jazz.
I had nothing to worry about as far as my dietary needs were concerned; the staff were very good about checking that the food had no allergen contaminants. My nut allergy was no problem there.
We watched the sushi chef as we waited for our orders; interestingly, he was searing some sushi with a blowtorch!
Over the sushi bar, there were white lights as dainty as snowflakes wrapped in a clear film of ice. Behind the chef were lovely Japanese items on display on the shelves.
We didn’t have to wait too long for our food; the meals arrived shortly.
The hibachi steak was juicy, the shrimp flavorful. The accompanying vegetables were crisp and fresh. My tempura shrimp was light and flaky on the outside; the shrimp inside, succulent.
The bento box made an excellent sampler, with California rolls, harumaki (Japanese spring roll), tempura (shrimp and veggie), and teriyaki of your choice (meat or tofu).
For dessert, we ordered the “tempura banana” to share; it was drizzled with sweet chocolate syrup and honey.
The two hibachi meals came with free dessert. We chose vanilla and green tea ice cream, the latter with just a hint of sweetness and a refreshing, earthy flavor.
Dinner for four cost $95.60 (not including tip). We had plenty of leftovers to take home, too.
Once we were out of the restaurant, I asked my family what they would rate their experience at the restaurant (on a scale of one to five stars, with five stars being the highest). All of them answered, “four and a half stars,” to which I happily agreed.
