Do you know anyone who would want to volunteer for a dog rescue program? Well, my mom did. She, the police, and the G.R.R.O.W.L.S dog rescue members saved a dog that I will never forget.

It all started when my mom's friend needed someone else to go with her and save a group of about 40 dogs. She asked my mom, Michelle.

Did you know that G.R.R.O.W.L.S. actually stands for something and that it has two R's for a reason? It stands for Golden Retriever Rescue Operated With Love Statewide. G.R.R.O.W.L.S. not only saves dogs, but also takes in dogs that the owners can't care for.

G.R.R.O.W.L.S. is so special because unlike any other dog rescue program, G.R.R.O.W.L.S. would never put a dog to sleep unless the dog is suffering. Other programs put the dog to sleep if they can't find an owner.

Ellie is a dog, and her story started with G.R.R.O.W.L.S. receiving notice from the state troopers of a man abusing golden retrievers and Labrador retrievers. A friend of my mom asked her if she would go with a team of police officers and animal control officers to save a big group of about 40 dogs, and she agreed. They put a dog crate in Michelle's (my mom's) car and drove to the mean man's house who was abusing dogs. Troopers went into the man's house and started taking the dogs out of the house and into different crates to go to the vet.

Ellie was in the crate in Michelle's car. Ellie was a female black Labrador retriever and she had just had a litter of puppies. Sadly, Ellie had broken teeth from eating rocks and a cigar burn on her front paw. She was terrified of men in baseball caps.

Did you know that there are about 15,885 dogs saved each year? G.R.R.O.W.L.S.' saying is, "We work to find the best dogs for the best people." After my mom told me this story, I knew I wanted to be a dog rescuer when I grow up, but the question is, do you?
