Irene: Ship stranded in Erie Canal after storm returning to service

A tour ship stranded for weeks when the Erie Canal was hit with massive flooding from Tropical Storm

A tour ship stranded for weeks when the Erie Canal was hit with massive flooding from Tropical Storm Irene is returning to service on the historic waterway.

Canal officials are marking a return to service of the Grande Mariner this afternoon at a canal-side ceremony in Waterford.

Sections of the canal were closed temporarily after Irene struck last August. Overflowing water eroded some banks, damaged some dams and locks and scattered uprooted trees and other debris.
