A specially-equipped New York Army National Guard helicopter is set to try out some firefighting gear.

The Guard says the UH-60 Blackhawk equipped to suck water from a river or lake into a 1,000-gallon tank will be tested on the Mohawk River in the southern Saratoga County hamlet of Crescent this morning.

The helicopter is called a “Firehawk” and can be used against brush fires and other blazes. Its tank can also be filled with materials like fire-retardant foam.

The test will involve gathering and pumping out water on the stretch of river between the Twin Bridges on Interstate 87 and the Route 9 Crescent Bridge. The chopper is scheduled to fly between 10 a.m. and noon.

The National Guard says the equipment is tested each year when it’s rigged to a helicopter.
