The woman who admitted to illegally taking nearly $100,000 in welfare benefi ts then later appealed, saying her guilty plea was coerced, began serving her sentence Thursday after losing her appeal, officials said.
Angela Lopez, 37, of Vanessa Court, Colonie, surrendered to authorities Tuesday. She was sentenced last year to two to six years in state prison, but remained free pending appeal.
She also must repay the money she took.
Lopez received the aid between May 2005 and April 2009 in the form of Medicaid and food stamps. But she failed to report income she received during that time. She also failed to report property owned by her family.
She pleaded guilty in May 2011 to second-degree welfare fraud and third-degree grand larceny.
