ROTTERDAM — Devon Willis ran for a school-record 352 yards and four touchdowns, and Nick Gallo added 149 yards and a pair of scores as Schalmont defeated Glens Falls, 41-16, Friday in a Class B West Division opener.

Glens Falls, playing at the Class B level for the first time in 10 years, led 16-0 early, but did not score after the first quarter.

“We settled down and figured it out,” said Schalmont coach Joe Whipple, whose team ran its winning streak against Section II foes to 29 games. “Devon and Nick had great games.”

Willis and Gallo both scored in the first quarter, which ended with Glens Falls ahead, 16-12, on a pair of TD passes by Cam Girard.

Gallo scored on a 27-yard run, and Willis ripped off a 60-yard TD run to give the Sabres a 26-16 lead at the half.

Willis added two more touchdown runs in the second half to close the scoring.

Willis, who shifted this season from tailback to quarterback, picked up his yardage on 21 carries. Gallo carried eight times.

Linebackers Kevin Paskevich and Jack Batchler both made nine tackles for Schalmont, the three-time defending Section II Class B champion,

The Sabres next play at Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake in a matchup of teams with recent postseason success.

The Spartans reached the Class A state final last fall, the third time in four years, and have won five of the last six Section II Class A titles. They lost their opener Friday at Troy, 17-7.

“They’re very good, and they’ll probably by angry,” said Whipple. “It will be a good test for us.”
