Focus Features buys ‘Place Beyond Pines’

A division of NBC Universal has bought the film “The Place Beyond the Pines” and plans to release it

A division of NBC Universal has bought the film “The Place Beyond the Pines” and plans to release it to theaters next year, according to the company’s website.

Focus Features bought the U.S. rights to the movie, which had its world premiere last week at the Toronto International Film Festival. “The Place Beyond the Pines” was filmed in and around Schenectady last summer.

The Derek Cianfrance film stars Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Eva Mendes. Gosling’s character, Luke Glanton, a professional motorcycle rider, discovers he has fathered a child with a diner waitress played by Mendes, and decides to commit a crime to support his child.

In doing so, he clashes with rookie cop Avery Cross, played by Cooper, who in the confrontation fatally shoots Glanton and is then himself led to the brink of death with the only relief to make penance for Glanton’s killing.

“Derek Cianfrance has made a bold, epic, and emotionally generous saga, once again showing a master’s hand in eliciting searingly beautiful performances from the actors with whom he collaborates,” said Focus Features’ CEO James Schamus and president Andrew Karpen in a joint statement on the company’s website.
