Eck-Reynolds combo lifts Dutchmen, 31-20

Sophomore quarterback Connor Eck threw three touchdown passes to Kyle Reynolds, and the Dutchmen’s defense took advantage of three interceptions to post a 31-20 victory over St. Lawrence in their Liberty League opener Saturday at Leckonby Stadium.

Union, which held a 383-288 advantage in total offense, is 1-3 overall. St. Lawrence fell to 0-1 and 0-4.

“He is getting better and developing every week,” said Union head coach John Audino about Eck. “He led the team and did a good job in the passing game. He is finding receivers whom he is getting a mix with. He threw some good footballs to Reynolds and had a lot of confidence.”

Eck completed 15 of 24 passes for 166 yards, while fullback Tim Hersey rushed for 80 yards on nine carries for Union. T.J. Franzese scored on a seven-yard run, and Tosin Kazeem added a 31-yard field goal.

Gajar Johnson had two interceptions, Brian Daley made seven tackles, and Bill Meile recorded two quarterback sacks to pace the Union defense.

“The first three teams we played are a combined 8-1, and like in the past, it prepared us,” Audino said. “I feel there is a lot more improvement in store than there was last year. The young players on offense are starting to understand what we need them to do, and defensively, we played very well. You won’t stop them on every drive. We are playing good on offense, defense and special teams.”

Union hosts Springfield Saturday night at 6.
