Schenectady City School District Board of Education member Gary Farkas abruptly announced his resignation today, after nearly four years on the board.
Farkas did not give a reason for his resignation, which was announced through the district. He had served on the board since 2008 and was serving the first year of his second three-year term.
The school board has the option to leave the seat open until May, conduct a special election within the next 90 days or appoint someone to fill the vacancy until the election next spring. Board members are expected to discuss these options during their next meeting Oct. 17.
Farkas was the last remaining board member who served during the controversial reign of former facilities manager Steven Raucci, who was convicted on arson charges related to the planting of explosive devices on the vehicles and at the homes of his perceived enemies.
